Dental Emergency FAQs in Raleigh, NC

You can take several steps at home to minimize damage and pain because of a dental emergency. Read answers to these commonly asked questions about dental emergencies to learn more:

What do I do if my dental crown comes off?

We can re-cement the crown back in your mouth. It’s a good idea to place your dental crown back on your tooth. If possible, use some over-the-counter dental cream that you can buy at your local drugstore. Be sure to rinse the crown off first and try in the fit before trying to apply adhesive cream. If you don’t have the crown, make every effort to get an appointment right away, as the tooth may be fragile and at risk of breaking.

What do I do if my child breaks or loses a tooth?

If your child has a toothache or a trauma-related injury, please call us immediately so we can take care of him/her as quickly as possible. You may rinse the mouth with water. OTC pain medications (please follow dosage charts) may help ease some symptoms. If a baby tooth is knocked out because of a fall or injury, replanting it may cause subsequent damage to the developing permanent tooth.

What do I do if I lose a permanent tooth?

Call our office immediately if a permanent tooth is knocked out or damaged. You may need to rinse it gently with cool water (don’t scrub clean) and replace the tooth in the socket while holding it there with a clean gauze or washcloth. If it cannot be replaced, place the tooth in a container of saliva and call us immediately. After-hour calls are accepted to ensure proper and timely care. The faster you act, the better.

You can prevent dental injuries by:

  • Using car seats and seat belts when traveling
  • Proofing your home to prevent falls
  • Getting a sports custom mouthguard for children who play sports

What do I do if I break a tooth?

If a tooth is chipped or fractured, call us immediately to quickly act to save the tooth, prevent infection, and reduce the need for extensive treatment. You may rinse the mouth with water and apply a cold compress if you have lip or cheek swelling. Place any broken fragments in a container of your saliva and bring it with you to the office.

What do I do if I’m a patient and have a dental emergency outside regular hours?

Call our office if you’re a patient and have a dental emergency after regular office hours. We will return your call to discuss your emergency as soon as possible.

Patient Review

I cannot say enough praises for Dr. Elderkin and her staff. Dr. Elderkin is so thorough and takes the time to explain everything. She is very knowledgeable and experienced. I was accommodated at the last minute for an acute dental pain and swelling. The clinic workflow was so easy to navigate. Her staff is very kind and patient. I have a bad gag reflex and it’s very hard for me to get X-rays. The staff exactly knew how to manage it and was able to get it without me having any issues. Highly highly recommend this practice!
