How Botox Treatment Works in Raleigh, NC

Botox is a neurotoxin that affects the nerve signals in the muscles. When the facial muscles contract, they create lines in the skin. Over time, wrinkles form on the face, often around the eyes, lips, and forehead. Injecting Botox into wrinkles will soften and temporarily smooth the skin.

Cosmetic Botox treatment can address:

  • Crow’s feet: The muscles that contract around the eyes.
  • Frown lines: Lines between the eyebrows.
  • Forehead lines: Muscles that fold on the forehead.

Botox can also be an effective treatment for patients with TMJ disorders. If there is an injury or stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) that help with biting and chewing, patients can experience jaw pain, headaches, migraines, and facial pain.

Dr. Giggey thoroughly examines the face before treating TMJ patients with Botox. She targets the facial muscles that create pain and tension and injects Botox into these muscles. Botox relaxes tense facial muscles, reducing TMD symptoms that create orofacial pain.

Botox vs. Xeomin: what is the difference?

Botox and Xeomin can provide similar results for patients and are both FDA-approved for cosmetic use. The biggest difference between these two treatment options is how they are manufactured. Xeomin is a purer form of botulinum toxin type A and does not contain additives like Botox.

For some patients with potential sensitivity or allergies, Xeomin can offer an advantage for addressing cosmetic concerns. Xeomin may also be recommended if a patient is experiencing diminishing results with Botox. Dr. Giggey will recommend the most suitable option for your unique needs, skin condition, and overall health and wellness.

Botox & Xeomin FAQs

Learn more about Botox treatment with answers to these commonly asked questions:

How long does Botox or Xeomin last?

Botox treatment typically lasts six months, although patients with moderate to severe lines may find that Botox lasts four months before they need additional injections. Xeomin yields similar results for patients. We will help schedule a follow-up appointment and monitor your appearance and results at regular dental appointments.

Am I a candidate for Botox or Xeomin treatment?

We recommend Botox for patients who want to treat TMJ pain and headaches, frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Xeomin is used for cosmetic purposes only. Patients in good health and over 18 years of age are great candidates for Botox treatment. We do not recommend Botox for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Botox is not for patients with nerve and muscle conditions, including ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or myasthenia gravis. Patients who have a skin infection on their face where they want Botox treatment will need to wait until the infection is treated to receive Botox.

What should I avoid after Botox or Xeomin treatment?

There are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind following Botox treatment. Right after treatment:

  • Do not rub your face
  • Avoid sleeping with pressure on your face
  • Do not exercise for the next 12 hours
  • Stay out of the sun for 24 to 48 hours

You can:

  • Frown in the hour after treatment
  • Sit up for the first four hours after treatment
  • Resume normal activities

Does insurance cover Botox or Xeomin?

Because these are cosmetic treatments, it is not covered by your dental insurance. Patients with migraines may have some insurance coverage for their treatments because they are therapeutic, but most Botox treatments may not have coverage.
