How Botox Treatment Works in Raleigh, NC

Botox is a neurotoxin that affects the nerve signals in the muscles. When the facial muscles contract, they create lines in the skin. Over time, wrinkles form on the face, often around the eyes, lips, and forehead. Injecting Botox into wrinkles will soften and temporarily smooth the skin.

Cosmetic Botox treatment can address:

  • Crow’s feet: The muscles that contract around the eyes.
  • Frown lines: Lines between the eyebrows.
  • Forehead lines: Muscles that fold on the forehead.

Botox can also be an effective treatment for patients with TMJ disorders. If there is an injury or stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) that help with biting and chewing, patients can experience jaw pain, headaches, migraines, and facial pain.

Dr. Giggey thoroughly examines the face before treating TMJ patients with Botox. She targets the facial muscles that create pain and tension and injects Botox into these muscles. Botox relaxes tense facial muscles, reducing TMD symptoms that create orofacial pain.

What is the Difference Between Botox vs. Xeomin?

Both Botox and Xeomin are popular, FDA-approved treatments that smooth wrinkles and give you a more youthful appearance. While they work similarly, there are some key differences you should know about.

The biggest difference between Botox and Xeomin comes down to their ingredients. Botox contains botulinum toxin type A plus added proteins. Xeomin is “pure” botulinum toxin type A with no extra additives.

Xeomin may be a better choice if you have allergies or sensitivities, since it doesn’t contain the extra proteins found in Botox. Some patients find Botox becomes less effective over time. Since Xeomin is formulated differently, it can sometimes work when Botox doesn’t.

Both treatments provide similar smoothing effects. The difference is in how your body responds to them.

Which One is Right for You?

Dr. Giggey will help decide which treatment is best based on:

  • Your skin type and health history
  • How you’ve responded to wrinkle treatments in the past
  • Your specific cosmetic goals

While Botox and Xeomin work in similar ways, their different formulas mean one might be better suited for your needs. During your consultation, we’ll review all your options so you can make the best choice for natural-looking, effective results.

Botox and Xeomin FAQs

Learn more about Botox treatment in Raleigh, NC, with answers to these commonly asked questions:

How long does it take to get Botox or Xeomin treatment?

Getting Botox or Xeomin is one of the quickest cosmetic treatments available. Your total visit time is about 15-30 minutes (including check-in and paperwork). It can take about 10 minutes for your injections and you can go right back to normal activities afterward.

How long does Botox or Xeomin last?

Botox treatment typically lasts six months. However, patients with moderate to severe lines may find that Botox lasts four months before they need additional injections. Xeomin yields similar results for patients. We will help schedule a follow-up appointment and monitor your appearance and results at regular dental appointments.

How do I prepare for my first Botox or Xeomin treatment?

Getting ready for your first wrinkle-relaxing treatment is simple, but a little preparation helps ensure the best results. Follow these steps before your appointment:

  • 1 Week Before Treatment: Avoid blood-thinning medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil supplements because they can increase bruising. You can check with your doctor first if prescribed. Also stop using skincare products with retinoids or strong exfoliants 3-5 days beforehand.
  • 24-48 Hours Before: Skip alcoholic drinks because alcohol can make bruising worse. Also don’t get facials, waxing, or chemical peels near treatment areas.
  • Day of Your Appointment: Arrive with a clean face (no makeup or moisturizer). Eat a normal meal beforehand to prevent lightheadedness. Be ready to discuss your goals and show expressions (like frowning or squinting) so your provider knows where to treat.

Am I a candidate for Botox or Xeomin treatment?

We recommend Botox for patients who want to treat:

  • TMJ pain and headaches
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines

Xeomin is used for cosmetic purposes only. Patients in good health and over 18 years of age are great candidates for Botox treatment. We do not recommend Botox for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Botox is not for patients with nerve and muscle conditions, including ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or myasthenia gravis. Patients who have a skin infection on their face where they want Botox treatment will need to wait until the infection is treated to receive Botox.

What should I avoid after Botox or Xeomin treatment?

There are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind following Botox treatment. Right after treatment:

  • Don’t rub your face
  • Avoid sleeping with pressure on your face
  • Do not exercise for the next 12 hours
  • Stay out of the sun for 24 to 48 hours

You can:

  • Frown in the hour after treatment
  • Sit up for the first four hours after treatment
  • Continue normal activities

Does insurance cover Botox or Xeomin?

Cosmetic treatments are not covered by dental insurance. Patients with migraines may have some insurance coverage for their treatments because they are therapeutic. But most Botox treatments may not have coverage.
