While many patients may think extractions are painful, we provide local anesthetic and sedation, depending on the type of extraction.

Additionally, after we remove problem teeth for our patients, they find that they no longer feel pain or discomfort due to those teeth. We welcome our patients to explore more about what happens during tooth extractions in our Raleigh, NC, office. Extractions can be a part of preventative dental care, minimizing the spread of a dental infection.

Tooth Extraction Treatment in Raleigh, NC

Our dental office can perform simple extractions, which remove teeth above the gum line. More complex extractions remove teeth at or below the gum line. While simple extractions only require local anesthetic, complex extractions may use dental sedation and anesthesia. To learn more about sedation options, see Sedation Dentistry.

After your extraction treatment, we recommend that you keep the extraction site clean. Follow a soft diet for several days after treatment and keep gauze at the extraction site as it heals. A blood clot will form to protect the site as it heals. A painful condition called dry socket can occur if the blood clot is dislodged. If you have your permanent teeth extracted, we recommend dental implants to replace the teeth after healing. Dental implants are permanent restorations that fuse to the jaw bone to replace single teeth or hold bridges and dentures in place.

When Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge. Typically, wisdom teeth emerge when patients are in their late teens or early twenties. However, these teeth can emerge earlier or later. While wisdom teeth may not cause problems for many patients, others may experience pain when their wisdom teeth erupt.

The wisdom teeth grow behind the back molars. Sometimes, there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth to emerge, which leads to impaction. Tooth impaction occurs when teeth cannot grow past the gums. As a result, patients can experience pain and tooth crowding. As tooth crowd, they become more difficult to clean. Removing wisdom teeth can prevent severe tooth pain, crowded and crooked teeth, and tooth decay.
